Did The Welsh Beat The Americans For First Ever Flight?

Considering the size of Wales, it is amazing that it has enjoyed more than its fair share of inventors and innovators.There are a number of people from Wales who actually claim it was infact a Welshman and not the American Wright brothers who should lay claim to the first ever aviator.

Never heard of him?  Long before activity holidays in Wales were the in thing, Frost got his head out of the clouds and down to the drawing board.This shy Welsh carpenter actually patented the aeroplane in 1894 and was flying in his machine a good eight years before the Wright Brothers at Kitty Hawk. Many are of the opinion that it was not Orville and Wilbur who made the first manned flight by a heaver-than-air aircraft, but it was in fact Bill.

For the majority of his life Bill lived in Saundersfoot, a village perched on the Pembrokeshire coast of South Wales and during the 1890s he was overtaken with the brilliant idea of constructing a flying machine. In spite of his lack of formal education, money, backing and resources he managed to build the “Frost Airship Glider” which was a hybrid between an airship and a propeller-driven aeroplane.  He piloted it on its maiden flight on or about 24th September 1896 where it flew for about 500 metres in the air before making a forced landing. It was very unfortunate that the following night a violent storm not only destroyed Bill’s machine, but pieces of it were scattered everywhere. The event was witnessed but not recorded, apart from local folklore and the memories of open-mouthed villagers.

Although he was just a poor working man, Frost had applied for a patent for his flying machine which was accepted and registered in London on 25th October 1894 under number 1894-20431. Unfortunately because Frost couldn’t afford the renewal fees on the patent, a time span of four years elapsed and the glory went to the Americans.  Today, following heroically in Bill’s slipstream, extreme sports fans can find perfect  UK activity holidays in Wales  with paragliding and hang gliding sites in places like Mynydd Llandygai near Bangor, Conwy Mountain, Harlech, Nant Gwrthryn, Trefor and Temadoc.In the UK Snowdonia is amongst one of the best free flying spaces as it offers high ‘alpine’ conditions and excellent XC potential for both paragliders and hang glider pilots and approximately 100 kms of airspace with no restrictions.   Maybe it’s time to ‘Wright a Wrong and declare that it’s Bill Frost they should be thanking for the thrill of a lifetime!
